  • Achillea millefolium Yarrow
    Medium-sized perennial, aromatic, with finely dissected gray green fuzzy leaves and flat-topped white flower heads. Common Yarrow grows at all elevations and moisture regimes on open sites.
  • Allium cernuum Nodding Onion
    Small perennial with a cluster of soft pink flowers which droop atop a single stalk. Nodding Onion is found in dry forests at low to mid elevations.
  • Aquilegia formosa Red Columbine
    Open-branched perennial up to 1m tall, with intricate red and yellow flowers. Prefering some moisture, Red Columbine is found at all elevations in forested ecosystems.
  • Balsamrhiza sagittata Arrow-leaved Balsamroot
    Robust perennial with large silvery pointed basal leaves, and masses of bright yellow flowers early
    in the season. Arrow-leaved Balsamroot is common at low elevations on hot dry sites in grasslands
    and open forests.
  • Castilleja miniata Paintbrush
    Perennial 30-70cm tall with many stems topped with colorful bracts ranging from brilliant red to soft pink and cream. Red Paintbrush is common in open areas at mid to high elevations on a variety of moisture regimes.
  • Cornus canadensis Bunchberry
    Small perennial with pointed oval leaves and flowers with 4 bright white bracts, often growing in masses covering the ground. Bunchberry, with its bright orange berries, is common in our forests in moist regions at all elevations.
  • Delphinium glaucum Tall Larkspur
    Tall perennial up 1-2m tall with a long spike of dark purple flowers and deeply lobed leaves. Tall Larkspur is found in forested areas at many elevations, prefering sites with moisture.
  • Delphinium nuttallianum Upland Larkspur
    Small delicate perennial with a spike of brilliant blue flowers in early to mid spring. Upland Larkspur grows at low to mid elevations in dry grasslands and open forests.
  • Epilobium latifolium Broad-leaved Willowherb
    Short perennial with a loose cluster of bright pink flowers. Broad-leaved Willowherb prefers a sandy or gravelly site on a watershed, and is found at mid to high elevations.
  • Erythronium grandiflorum Yellow Glacier Lily
    Small perennial with bright flowers from bulbs, blooming early in the season. Yellow Glacier Lily is common at high elevations in open moist areas.
  • Ftitillaria lanceolata Chocolate Lily
    Small to medium-sized perennial with unique drooping brown mottled flowers which produce
    upright winged capsules containing numerous flat seeds. Chocolate Lily is at home in forest
    openings and grasslands at all elevations.
  • Fritillaria pudica Yellow Bell
    Early blooming petite perennial with bright yellow bell-shaped flowers. Yellow Bell is found in dry open grasslands at low elevations.
  • Gaillardia aristata Brown-eyed Susan
    Small to medium-sized perennial with bright yellow to orange flowers with brown centers atop numerous stems. Brown-eyed Susan grows in dry regions at low to mid elevations.
  • Geranium viscosissimum Sticky Geranium
    Medium-sized perennial with many multi-branched stems blooming with bright purple flowers from mid spring to early summer. Sticky Geranium prefers grasslands and forest openings in our drier areas.
  • Heuchera cylindrica Round-leaved Alumroot
    Small perennial with upright creamy white flower stalks arising from a compact base of round leaves. Round-leaved Alumroot thrives on dry rocky sites at low to high elevations.
  • Lupinus arcticus Arctic Lupine
    Medium-sized perennial with palmately compound leaves and spikes of brilliant bluish purple flowers
    which produce small pea-like pods containing seeds. Arctic Lupine prefers forest openings with
    moisture at higher elevations.
  • Lupinus sericeus Silky Lupine
    Small to medium-sized perennial with soft purple flower stalks and hairy palmate leaves. Silky Lupine thrives in dry grasslands and forest openings at lower elevations.
  • Monarda fistulosa Wild Bergamot
    Medium-sized perennial with round pinkish purple flowers heads atop multiple stalks. Wild Bergamot is found at low to mid elevations in clearings and open forests with little to moderate moisture.
  • Oryzopsis hymenoides Indian Ricegrass
    Small perennial grass with a mass of openly branching flower heads. Indian Ricegrass is a dry site plant found at low elevations.
  • Penstemon procerus Small-flowered Penstemon
    Small perennial with clusters of bright blue/purple flowers on multiple stems. Small-flowered penstemon prefers open areas and is found from low to high elevations with dry to moderate moisture.
  • Pseudoroegnaria spicata Bluebunch Wheatgrass
    Perennial bunchgrass 60-100cm tall with many stems producing narrow spike inflorescences. Bluebunch Wheatgrass is common in low elevation dry grasslands and open forests.
  • Solidago canadensis Canada Goldenrod
    Medium to large perennial with a large bright yellow feathery inflorescence. Canada Goldenrod grows from low to mid elevations on a variety of sites, preferring some moisture, and often in masses on open areas.
