  • Acer glabrum Douglas Maple
    Medium to large shrub Acer glabrum1-7m tall, or sometimes a small tree preferring a well-drained moist site. Douglas Maple has typical maple shaped leaves and pairs of winged seeds.
  • Alnus crispa ssp sinuata Sitka Alder
    Deciduous shrub 1-5m tall with sharply toothed shiny oval leaves and bearing “cones”. Thrives in open sunny areas, often filling in after a disturbance.
  • Alnus incana ssp tenufolia
    Thinleaf Mountain Alder
    Shrub or small tree 2-10m in height with thin oval leaves shallowly lobed. Thinleaf Mountain Alder prefers moist sites.
  • Amelanchier alnifolia Saskatoon
    Medium to large deciduous shrub up to 5m high whith clusters of small white flowers changing to edible dark purple fruits. Saskatoon is common at low to mid elevations ei dry to moist sites.
  • Arctostaphylos uva-ursi Kinnickinnick
    Spreading groundcover with small evergreen leaves and bright red mealy fleshed berries. Kinnickinnick prefers well-drained sites at all elevations.
  • Betula glandulosa Scrub Birch
    Medium-sized deciduous shrub with small round leathery toothed leaves, bearing small catkins. Scrub Birch prefers moist sites.
  • Betula occidentalis Water Birch
    Small shrubby deciduous tree up to 10m with oval toothed leaves and deep reddish brown bark. Water Birch prefers moist soils at low to mid elevations.
  • Ceanothus sanguineus Redstem Ceanothus
    Medium-sized shrub to 3m tall with reddish bark and clusters of small flowers which change to dry husks containing seeds. Redstem Ceanothus is common at low to mid elevations in warm moist areas.
  • Ceanothus velutinus Snowbrush
    Low-growing round shrub with evergreen leaves and clusters of tiny white flowers which form capsules. Snowbrush is found in all elevation ranges, generally on drier sites.
  • Chrysothamnus nauseosus Rabbitbrush
    Small compact flat-topped shrub with fine silver leaves and bright yellow flowers in late summer. Rabbitbrush is a low elevation dry grassland plant.
  • Clematis ligusticifolia White Clematis
    Vigorous vine to 20m long with showy masses of white flowers, changing to fuzzy white clusters of seeds. White Clematis is found at low elevations in our arid regions at sites with some moisture.
  • Clematis occidentalis Blue Clematis
    Delicate woodland vine to 5m in length,Clematis occidentalis with soft blue flowers borne singly. Blue Clematis is found scattered at low to mid elevation forested areas.
  • Cornus canadensis Bunchberry
    Small perennial with pointed oval leaves and flowers with 4 bright white bracts, often growing in masses covering the ground. Bunchberry, with its bright orange berries, is common in our forests in moist regions at all elevations.
  • Cornus stolonifera Red osier Dogwood
    Medium-sized shrub with deep red bark and clusters of white berries. Red osier Dogwood prefers moist sites at low to mid elevations.
  • Crataegus douglasii Black Hawthorn
    Large deciduous shrub with fierce spines and clusters of black fruits. Black Hawthorn is found in warm climates from low to mid elevations.
  • Elaeagnus commutata Wolf-willow
    Medium-sized shrub with distinctive silvery oval leaves, yellow flowers and silver colored berries containing a single large seed. Wolf-willow is found at low to mid elevations in well- drained sites.
  • Lonicera involucrata Black Twinberry
    Small to medium-sized shrub producing shiny black berries in pairs in early summer. Black Twinberry is a moisture lover found at all elevations.
  • Mahonia aquifolium Tall Oregon Grape
    Small shrub with shiny prickly “holly-like” leaves, yellow flowers and clusters of blue berries. Tall Oregon Grape is common at low to mid elevations on drier sites.
  • Oplapanax horridus Devil's Club
    Medium-sized shrub with large palmate lobed leaves, very spiny stems and branches, bearing an upright cluster of small white flowers which form bright red berries. Devil's Club grows at low to high elevations in moist shady areas.
  • Penstemon fruticosus Shrubby Penstemon
    Small compact shrub with showy vibrant purple flowers. Shrubby Penstemon is found at low to high elevations on well-drained open rocky sites.
  • Prunus pensylvanica Pin Cherry
    Small tree or large shrub 1-5m tall with long pointed leaves, clusters of delicate white flowers which produce small bright red berries. Pin Cherry grows at low to mid elevations in moist areas.
  • Prunus virginiana Chokecherry
    Medium to large shrub 1-4m tall with long sprays of soft white flowers forming hanging clusters of small black cherries. Chokecherry is common at low to mid elevations on drier sites.
  • Rhus glabra Smooth Sumac                                                                                     Small to medium-sized shrub with serrated pinnately compound leaves, turning brilliant orange, red, burgundy in fall. Smooth Sumac is suited for dry climates at low elevations, and due to suckering will fill out a large area.
  • Ribes cereum Wax Currant
    Small to medium-sized shrub with small lobed
    light greenRibes cereum leaves and bearing many red currants in early summer. Wax Currant grows on dry sites at low to mid elevations.
  • Rosa nutkana Nootka Rose
    Medium-sized shrub with soft pink flowers which form deep red hips along arching, sparsely spined branches. Nootka Rose is found in wetter areas at low to mid elevations.
  • Rosa woodsii Wood's Rose
    Small to medium-sized rosebush with clusters of small rosehips. Wood's Rose grows on dry sites at low to mid elevations.
  • Sambucus cerulea Blue Elderberry
    Large shrub 2 to 4m in height with pinnately compound leaves large clusters of creamy white flowers which transform into masses of light blue berries. Blue Elderberry is found at low to mid elevations of southern BC in a variety of climatic conditions.
  • Shepherdia canadensis Soopolallie
    Medium-sized shrub with dark green oval leaves and many juicy red or orange berries maturing in mid summer. Soopolallie is common at all elevations on dry to moist sites.
  • Symphoricarpos albus Snowberry
    Small to medium-sized shrub with dense clusters of white berries which persist into winter. Snowberry is common in open areas at low to mid elevations.
  • Taxus brevifolia Pacific Yew
    Evergreen shrub or small tree 2-15m tall with spreading branches and flat needles, and bearing red fleshy open-ended arils in which sits an brown oval seed. Western Yew is shade tolerant and is found in wet regions at low to mid elevations.Vaccinium ovalifolium

    Small shrub to 2m tall with light green oval leaves and single edible light blue berries. Oval-leaved Blueberry is found at all elevations in areas of high moisture.
  • Vaccinium scoparium Grouseberry
    Very small shrub with sparse red berries. Grouseberry is a common groundcover in open conifer forests at mid to high elevations.
